The Artificial Intelligence is one of the fields that more doubts generates in the world of the technology. Today we speak of one of the most promising fields for Artificial Intelligence. We are talking about mobile photography.

Artificial Intelligence: Simpler Than It Seems

When we talk about Artificial Intelligence it is easy to mention SkyNet and a possible rebellion of the machines. The truth is that it is a possible future that we should fear and take into account, but also to get to the point that everything that has Artificial Intelligence is bad and we should burn it.

Artificial Intelligence is often viewed with grandiloquence, as a substitute solution to the human mind. We need to simplify more. Artificial Intelligence in many cases is used for very concrete tasks, and certainly much more mundane than ending human civilization.

When talking about Artificial Intelligence there are two simple examples that I like to mention. On one hand we have Google Photos, that cloud in which we can save our photos and that sometimes surprises us with collages of our photos or editions of others. On the other hand we have Emui, the personalization layer of Huawei, whose sole purpose is to anticipate our habits to open our favorite applications faster. Nothing that we have to worry about.

Google Lens Image Recognition

One of the most unnoticed news happened in the past Google IO was a new application that uses the power of AI. His name is Google Lens, and he’s just the worthy successor to Google Goggles.

What does it consist of? As it is basically a camera application that has integrated the Google Assistant. We can take a photo of a place and get information of what we are photographing thanks to Google image recognition.

It is certainly interesting how it works, and already at the conference we showed a practical use of the platform. It was enough to take the picture to the password of a router for our phone to register the WiFi network as known.

The potential of Google Lens is immense (as it had Google Goggles) and one of the most practical applications we have known for some time. It is the translator of Google, which is able to translate texts from the camera. And the best thing is that thanks to text recognition, it works.

The “magic” zoom of the CSI thanks to Artificial Intelligence

Some of what was also discussed briefly in Google IO was the treatment of images through an Artificial Intelligence. Thanks to an advanced system they showed us something similar to the famous “magic zoom” of the CSI. And is that little by little the Artificial Intelligence of Google is improving its ability to increase the sharpness of blurry photographs.

This will not only be used to create a digital zoom that works, but also to get sharper pictures, even where the noise caused by a low-light scene is compensated by the photo’s own processing. An Artificial Intelligence in the Camera? One of the possible futures

Will we really see Artificial Intelligence systems in the cameras of the mobiles? It is certainly an alternative for the future that should not surprise us. Thanks to Deep Learning, the software itself is able to adapt to our tastes and customs, helping to offer a more personalized experience to each user.

Imagine for a moment that you have the habit of making a quick photograph, just take the phone out of your pocket or after making a sudden movement (look at that bird!). An Artificial Intelligence that is accustomed to your unique habit will learn of your intentions, taking that photo to which you usually arrive late in the process before you have time to turn on the mobile, open the camera application and shoot.

Although undoubtedly, the terrain where it is most promising lies in achieving the best possible quality in an “automatic” way. We know that in mobile photography, the automatic mode is not usually the best, but the most used, and that is because when taking pictures with the mobile we want the most immediacy possible.

Integrating an Artificial Intelligence that offers us the best automatic mode is one of the challenges that manufacturers may end up shedding the tooth. Not only do we process images better and better, but with a mode that modifies camera parameters (such as ISO or shutter) even more intelligently, and even taking into account our habits (such as making our pulse more delicate At a specific time).
