We are witnessing changing times in electric mobility, something to be expected, seeing the increasing number of plug-in bets that manufacturers are offering with increasing autonomy.
However, if this is within the expectation, it is not so much the model that is most encouraging the markets in which it has so far appeared. This is the Toyota Prius Prime, or the plug-in hybrid version of the latest generation of the Toyota Prius. The numbers it is reaping are such that it could snatch the hegemony of global sales in a year that the Nissan LEAF has been boasting in recent years.
We talked about it a few weeks ago with the promising sales of the model in the United States, and the trend has only confirmed. In fact, and in case the market table is finally complete, the Toyota Prius Prime is the plug-in that has sold more units in that country in April, surpassing the Chevrolet Volt, and accumulating more than 6,000. Only the latter and the Tesla Model S surpass it there.

We understand that this is a temporary reign, given that it is not a model that stands out because of its low autonomy of 35 kilometers (under EPA approval), and because it is also in a stage of generational transition of electric cars.
Even so, the plug-in Prius is taking full advantage of that gap that is leaving the market, and like it has happened in the United States, the model is also assaulting its country of origin. It takes 6,000 units registered in only two months, completely surpassing classics like the Nissan LEAF itself or the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Depending on the arrival of the next generation of the LEAF, and the subsequent response from the market, the Prius Prime is set to become the best seller of 2017. Not a bad thing for a manufacturer that had discarded the plug-in models of its roadmap.
